KASHMIR

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE KASHMIR

Set like a jewelled crown on the map of India, Kashmir is a multi-faceted diamond, changing its hues with the seasons - always extravagantly beautiful. Two major Himalayan ranges, the Great Himalayan Range and the Pir Panjal, surround the landscape from the north and south respectively. They are the source of great rivers, which flow down into the valleys, forested with orchards and decorated by lily-laden lakes.

The Mughals aptly called Kashmir ‘Paradise on Earth’ where they journeyed across the hot plains of India, to the valley’s cool environs in summer. Here they laid, with great love and care, Srinagar’s many formal, waterfront gardens, now collectively known as the Mughal Gardens. Anecdotes of four and five centuries ago describe their love for these gardens, and the rivalries that centred around their ownership. They also patronized the development of art & craft among the people of Kashmir, leaving behind a heritage of exquisite artisanship among thes people and making the handicrafts of the land prized gifts all over the world.

Kashmir is a land where myriad holiday ideas are realised. In winter, when snow carpets the mountains, there is skiing, tobogganing, sledge-riding, etc. along the gentle slopes. In spring and summer, the honey-dewed orchards, rippling lakes and blue skies beckon every soul to sample the many delights the mountains and valleys have to offer. Golfing at 2,700 m above the sea, water-skiing in the lakes and angling for prized rainbow trout, or simply drifting down the willow fringed alleys of lakes in shikaras and living in gorgeous houseboats are some of the most favoured ones.

SEASON

MUGHAL GARDEN

Kashmir has four distinct seasons, each with its own peculiar character and distinctive charm. These are spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Spring, which extends roughly from March to early May, is when a million blossoms carpet the ground. The weather during this time can be gloriously pleasant at 23oC or chilly and windy at 6oC. This is the season when Srinagar experiences rains, but the showers are brief.

Summer extends from May until the end of August. Light woollens may be required to wear out of Srinagar. In higher altitudes night temperatures drop slightly. Srinagar at this time experiences day temperatures of between 25oC and 35oC. At this time, the whole valley is a mosaic of varying shades of green - rice fields, meadows, trees, etc. and Srinagar with its lakes and waterways is a heaven after the scorching heat of the Indian plains.

KASHMIR VALLEY IN SUMMER

The onset of autumn, perhaps Kashmir's loveliest season, is towards September, when green turns to gold and then to russet and red. The highest day temperatures in September are around 23oC and night temperatures dip to 10oC by October, and further drop by November, when heavy woollens are essential.

Kashmir Valley in winter

Through December, to the beginning of March is winter time, which presents Srinagar in yet another mood. Bare, snow-covered landscapes being watched from beside the warmth of a fire is a joy that cannot be described to anyone who has not experienced it. Some houseboats and hotels remain open in winter-these are either centrally heated or heated with ‘bukharis’, a typically Kashmiri stove kept alight with embers of wood, quite effective in the winter.

Trekking for 2008 in north of India by YASH EXPEDITION MANALI

Today the district capital of Ladakh plays host instead to visitors from all over the world. Located in the western end of the Great Himalaya, Ladakh displays an astounding variety of mountain ranges with river basins and numerous rivers. Composed of bald granite hills and mountains, Ladakh also sustains a sizeable amount of wild life. Today it offers the traveller and the adventurer numerous trails to explore and trek. While Leh itself offers the visitor almost all the amenities he could ask for, the rest of the region remains remote and uninhabited save for the occasional village with its own Monastery and green fields of barely, wheat and peas the only crops that manage to grow in this barren land. Trekking enthusiasts have a choice of a number of options. Ladakh offers treks ranging from 3 days to 24 days some of them going through the stark landscape of Zanskar while others lead into the neighbouring state of Himachal Pradesh. Mountaineering is another outdoor activity that one can indulge in with numerous peaks towering in the Ladakh and Zanskar ranges. Himalaya Kingdom offers the very best of services to all its clients and promises a great time in this enchanting land.

Markha Valley Trek
The trail starts from Spituk village and heads towards the Markha village through some of the most scenic areas in Ladakh. A portion of the Hemis High Altitude National Park [4400 Sq.Kms] falls within this route and you are likely to spot Bharal or Blue Sheep and colourful birdlife and certainly the hyperactive marmots. Two passes over 4800m / 15,750ft are crossed besides a few stream and rivers forded as the trail offers you spectacular views of valleys and towering snow clad mountain peaks.

Lamayuru - Zanskar
This trans Ladakh trail starts from Lamayuru and winding through river valleys, gorges and pastures lies sandwiched between the Stok and Ladakh mountain ranges. Going from west to east, the trail affords views of mountain peaks and picturesque villages. The trail finally ends at Shang Sumdo with its typical farmhouses and gurgling irrigation channels flowing through a green inviting meadow. From here Karu on the main highway is a mere 8 Kms Padum is the unremarkable administrative centre of Zanskar, and has few remaining signs of its historical status as capital of the Kingdom of Zanskar. Since the completion of the vehicle route from Kargil it has became the roadhead town, used by visitors as a re-supply station on the trekking routes through the region.

Lamayuru - Padum
This trek commences from Padum the main town in the Zanskar valley. On the drive to Padum we have to halt overnight at the predominantly Muslim town of Kargil after which a diversion off the main Leh-Srinagar highway leads into the breathtaking land of Zanskar.

Tso Moriri Lake
This equally scenic trail through stark yet beautiful mountains skirts the brackish Tso Kar lake and then heads on to the larger Tso Moriri lake. Each day of the trail offers you enthralling views of the surrounding landscape including the sweeping shrub carpeted Changthang plateau home to a number of wild life species including the Tibetan Wild Ass (Kyang), Tibetan Wolf, colonies of marmots and picas, and the ingenious snow leopard. It is here also where the nomadic ChanHSa tribe wander grazing their flocks of Chigu goats.

Pangong Lake
The beautiful high altitude Pangong Lake is also another popular destination with trekkers. It is a picturesque route that covers Shey and Thikse with their interesting monasteries, before turning off into the side valley of Chemrey . It goes over the Chang - la , the pass over the Ladakh range which despite it height is not too difficult to tackle. At the base of the pass, tangse has an ancient temple. The trek ends at spangmik, which is the furthest point to which foreigners are permitted - about 7 km along the southern bank of the lake.

Nubra Valley
Along the eastern ridge of the Karakoram Range in northern Ladakh is the Nubra valley comprising of the upper Shayok and Nubra river valleys. The trekking route to this area is demanding and traverses the Kardung-la pass along the ancient trade route from Leh to Central Asia . It is the highest motorable road in the world! The breathtaking view from the pass surveys an entire length of the Indus valley in the south and a magnificent panorama of snow clad peaks. The route follows the valley past attractive villages to Deskit, the largest village in the valley. Onwards to Hundar down the Shayok valley, the trail wanders past rolling sand dunes. There is a small population of double humped Bactrian camels here and visitors can avail of a marvellous moonlight camel safari on the dune

Chadar Trek
The word "Chadar" means "white sheet or blanket". And that's what it appears like when you walk over the white frozen Zanskar river. This trek though a demanding one gives you all the thrills of a great adventure. Temperatures can plummet to as low as -30° and even though you walk through amazing landscape you have to be prepared for a really cold experience of course kept warm by glowing fires which we light up each evening at camp. Our daily trek begins at around 9:00am and by then the sun's up and blue skies bring cheer despite the cold temperatures. The trek goes along the Zanskar River in the region of Lingshed and constitutes a walk of around 15 days with 3850m / 12,628ft. Being the highest altitude reached. Many of these spots cannot be accessed during the summer months as they go through spectacular deep canyons and gorges.

Stok Kangri
The Stok Kangri a relatively easy mountain peak climb towers at 6250m / 20,506ft and is ideal for the amateur mountaineer and the seasoned trekker. Ice axes and crampons are essentials on this expedition. The trail winds through quaint villages giving you glimpses of the simple Ladakhi lifestyle. A few streams have to be crossed on this trail before you reach the base camp and start the attempt of this glorious peak.

The Rupshu into Himachal Trek
One of our best treks and one of the most impressive leading over the Zalung Karpo La 16,570 ft and through awesome gorges and tiny far and in between villages into the neighbouring state of Himachal Pradesh. Excellent views of the Zanskar and Ladakh ranges. Good chances of sighting the Blue Sheep, Kyang herds, Tibetan hare, marmots and picas and maybe the elusive Snow Leopard? Vast plains and easy passes.

Sham valley Trek
Through the Indus valley and the ancient kingdom of Sham, we will discover the main Ladakhi monasteries and the wonderful sites surrounding them: Shey, Thiksey, Hemis, Spitok, Phyang, Lamayuru and Alchi are all accessible by road, and Temisgang, Ridzong and Likir line the trekking route. This itinerary is of moderate difficulty and the path does not rise above 4500m. The trail crosses numerous villages where the people have kept their Tibetan ways and customs.
